VOLUNTEERS NEEDED- Northern Alberta Skills Exploration Days

November 26 @ 8:30 am - November 27 @ 3:30 pm

Skills Exploration Day is Skills Canada’s newest program developed to help introduce junior high students to design thinking and building an actual prototype!  Students will use real tools and materials related to 8 different skilled trade and technology careers (graphic design,  fashion technology, electrical installations, carpentry, cabinet making, plumbing, sheet metal and welding).

9:30-11:30 AM   Learn-A-Skill Career Exploration

The Learn-A-Skill stations will allow students to explore their interests and passions as they learn about various career possibilities and occupational areas. Careers such as Cabinet Making, Carpentry, Electrical Installation, Fashion Technology, Graphic Design, Plumbing, Sheet Metal, and Welding will be featured stations Groups of ~24 students will rotate through hands-on stations every 20 minutes for the opportunity to work one-on-one with industry experts using real life tools, technology and materials. Not only will students learn a variety of skills and knowledge that will allow them to independently build a prototype, but they will also learn interesting facts about careers such as: duties & tasks, working conditions, skills & abilities, employment & advancement, and training & apprenticeship.

11:30-2:00 PM   Build Prototype & Working Lunch

Students will have 2.5 hours to adapt to changes, create a product and solve problems in response to the challenge. Using a prototype sketch, each group will build a prototype while applying the skills and knowledge they learned at the Learn-A-Skill stations. Volunteers will receive a free lunch!
